Once upon a time, there was a little garden, and in it lived a widowed grandfather. He spent his days tinkering in his workshop, and his greatest joy came from his grandchildren, who visited him regularly. Three siblings fondly recall the stories their beloved grandmother once told like no one else. The eldest, Zuzka, now tries to carry on the tradition – each night before bed, she conjures up tales from her grandmother’s straw hat using selected words. This opens a trove of whimsical and moving stories – of joy and sorrow, small people and great deeds, of flying and discovering. Inspired by Arnošt Goldflam’s book Of Unwanted Things and People, the film brings to animation not only imagination but deeply emotional moments where loss, hope, love, and the everyday miracles of life meet. Tales from the Magic Garden had its world premiere at the Berlinale and will also screen at Annecy, the world’s most prestigious animation festival.
