High on the rooftops of a mountain village in China’s Yunnan province unfolds a remarkable story of a child’s dream. Ayimei (11) and her friends love football. Lacking a proper pitch, they play on rooftops covered in drying fruit, using pomelos or corn as a ball. When a regional girls’ tournament is announced, they decide to form a team. But obstacles arise: mockery from boys, farm chores, and no gear or training. Their only hope is Shi Kai, a former footballer who withdrew into solitude and alcohol after an injury. With stunning mountain scenery, authentic performances by non-actors, and a tender story of dreams, friendship, and resilience, this debut feature shows that even in the most remote village – a football team can be born. Shot during the pandemic, Football on the Roof won China’s Golden Rooster for Best Children’s Film and the top youth jury prize in Vienna.
