Talented schoolgirl Nawi (13) dreams of studying and changing her life. When she learns her father wants to marry her off to an older man in exchange for cattle, she refuses and decides to fight for her future. Set in northern Kenya, this powerful story explores the clash between tradition and personal freedom. Wide shots of the African landscape alternate with intimate moments as Nawi transforms from a hopeful student into a symbol of determination. Michelle Lemuya Ikena gives a quietly powerful performance as a girl who refuses to be a passive part of a preordained fate. Nawi offers a sensitive view of a reality many girls cannot escape and brings attention to a topic that deserves to be heard. Though child marriage is illegal in Kenya, it still occurs at alarming rates.
