In the early 1960s, fifth-grader Scotty Smalls relocates to a small town with his parents. Local kids ridicule him for his lack of baseball skills. However, when the leader of a local gang invites him to play at a makeshift field, his fortunes shift. A transformative summer ensues, filled with baseball, adventures, first romances, and encounters with a mysterious beast and its owner beyond the field's fence. Scotty bonds with nine boys, earns a spot on the team, and their leader becomes a local hero.
