Sarah Winkenstette is a trained journalist and worked for various children's television programmes on WDR and ZDF before beginning her film studies at the Academy of Media Arts in Cologne. Her debut film ZU WEIT WEG was released in cinemas in 2020 and won numerous awards at international film festivals. Sarah Winkenstette has since directed various television films and series, including Schloss Einstein. GREETINGS FROM MARS is her second feature film.

When his mother unexpectedly has to go to China, Tom and his siblings Nina (15) and Elmar (13) must live for six weeks at their grandparents’ house in the countryside in Lunau. This is a disaster for Tom, but to make sure he makes it, his mother gives him a logbook and suggests that he see the trip to his grandparents as a trial Mars mission. Tom's greatest wish is to one day be the first person to fly there.
